It's sometimes a tough question - what can you get Mom this year for Mother's Day? What does she need? How do I top last year's present?
We are fortunate enough to live in a society where if we need something, for the most part, we just go out and buy it. Gone are the days where you had to wait until a big holiday or birthday to receive the items you truly needed. Or are they?
Here at RyKie Images & Events, we've devised some cool ideas for what you can get Mom for her big day!
1. Book a session for the family
Our sessions have no limit on time or number of people, and we can plan a location that best suits your needs. Return clients also receive certain benefits!
2. Order a large print or canvas of your favourite image
Prints are sometimes overlooked, but they are quite important. Think of how many times you pull out a USB or disk and stare at it...not often, I'm guessing. Wall art and print gifts are items that have real value. We use a professional lab to ensure your images will also last for many decades.
3. Book a Beauty Day for Mom
With our team of amazing partners, you can give Mom the royal treatment. We're talking hair, make-up, spa treatment, glamour session, and more!
4. Individual photography lessons
Some Moms are shutterbugs, but maybe are intimidated by their new camera. We offer private and group lessons that take the fear out of photography.
5. Create a story book
Photobooks are a great way to capture memories, but what about writing a custom story? We've done this around the International Home Office, and to great success! They are truly treasured items.
6. Gift Certificates
Still not sure what to get Mom? We offer the classic standby in any denomination so she can choose her own Mother's Day prize.
7. Day in the Life
These sessions are so much fun, and a great way to capture the true essence of your family.
We're in the business of making memories. Let RyKie Images & Events help create some for Mom this year!
Aren't we all a little odd?
This question is posed on a t-shirt at the merchandise station during the April 7 show with Lauren Mann & the Fairly Odd Folk. The answer is: oh yes. Yes, we are!
The band stopped in Brooks during their current tour, headlined by husband and wife duo, Whitebird. Now, if you aren't familiar with Lauren's music, get out from under your rock immediately. They call Pender Island home now, for for a few years, they were the pride of Brooks - most famously winning the CBC Searchlight competition with their most recognizable hit "I Lost Myself" (come on, I know that you're whistling the intro/outro just reading that title!).
Since Searchlight, they've gone through some changes, with moves progressively further West, and in their line-up. Last year, Lauren has been somewhat quiet, but a new album due out this summer will change all that.
The band even performed some new material in Brooks at the Tumbleweed Theatre stage, and a David Bowie cover as well.
As I mentioned, Whitebird opened for Lauren, toting their 3-track EP with them as they tour. Matthew and Sherry Ann Des Roche simply perform beautiful music. Insightful lyrics with profound meaning and fantastic melodies are a tie that binds their blossoming repertoire. We will no doubt be hearing more music from them soon, perhaps some insights from this adventure on the road with the Folk.
As always, it's a lovely experience to be part of a LMATFOF show, especially when they bring their Pender Island friends to the prairie. An added bonus was the Tumbleweed space, which feels like a living room (complete with a comfy couch) setting.

Update: Here's a gallery from Lauren Mann & the Fairly Odd Folk plus Whitebird. You can buy a print from this site (processed by our pro lab and delivered to your door). All profits from the prints you buy go right back to the band so they can make more music for us to enjoy!
Another Update: Some of our images from the Brooks show ended up in the April 15 edition of the Prairie Post! Better pick up a copy soon, they're going fast!
