Saw this little info-graphic the other day, and thought that some non-photographers would like to see what some of the behind the scenes work looks like (I do disagree with the part about insurance plans. Pro's insure their stuff and are protected)!
The times may vary with how unique each session is, but it gets the point across. Professional photographers are far different than point-and-shooters. After all, that's why you hired a pro, right? Typically, I tell a couple that an entire wedding will easily take 40 hours of work for a pro photographer. The actual shooting time might be a few hours, but all the background work really adds up! There's a statistic out there that pros spend about 20% of their time actually shooting, while the rest is marketing, consultations with clients, and editing (just to name a few). That's pretty close to the truth. The fun stuff (shooting) is fairly minimal, while the work of holding a business together takes the bulk of one's waking hours. One point I wanted to get across is the actual dollar value associated with being an artist. So many clients base their ultimate decision solely on price - who is the cheapest around? Of course, everyone wants to get a deal, but how much of a deal is it to have your images not captured correctly (if this has happened to you, we do offer an image correction service as well)? I said before that a wedding can easily consume 40 hours for a professional photographer. With that in mind, would you work for $400 during a work week? Even a Lifestyle shoot may have me only shooting for 45 minutes or an hour, but tack on an hour consultation beforehand, anywhere from 10-30 minutes to correctly edit an image, another hour to meet with the client again for proofing, maybe an hour ordering the products they chose, and 45 minutes of so for delivery - you can see where this is going - pretty quick, my 45-minute session becomes hours of work. I'm quite fortunate that my clients see the value in hiring a local artist to document their important events - not just the cheapest deal around! Thanks again for letting me be a part of your special day!
